Tips for Tutors

Don and Dorathy Ketai are a unique if not extraordinary husband-wife tutoring team. Don, a retired podiatrist, and Dorathy, a former physician's office manager, devote more than 120 hours a year of precious retirement time to an effort they consider important.

"You find a sense of accomplishment and self-worth," says Don, "I really enjoy the response of my students and the advances that they're able to make. It's very heartwarming and I enjoy it a great deal."

The Ketais have tutored and offered guidance to immigrants from many countries including Japan, China, Poland, Russia and Korea. Dorathy sees their work as improving international relations. She believes a positive tutoring experience for learners not only enhances their lives in the United States but also contributes to good relations between the U.S. and the learners' homelands.

Not only do Dorathy and Don take on two or three learners at a time, they also share their generosity and hospitality by hosting a brunch each year for their learners and their families. This rare opportunity offers an occasion for fellow learners from other cultures to meet and celebrate their accomplishments, discuss their ESL learning experiences, and make new friends who share a common bond. There is just one rule at this brunch -- only English is spoken.
