Derrick Gilford overcame many adversities to learn to read. In young adulthood, he led a destructive lifestyle, perhaps related to his inability to read. Drawing on his strong character and religious belief, Derrick turned his life around, married, started two businesses, and began studying for the ministry. But his reading was limited to only basic words that he had memorized for daily living. "I was tired of struggling for words," Derrick recalls.

He realized the ability to read was essential for reaching his goals: operating his own businesses and studying for the ministry. With the help of his wife, he contacted the Oakland Literacy Council for help in 1997. "Reading would improve my life financially and spiritually," he noted at the time. That proved to be an understatement. "Learning to read has changed my life," Derrick enthusiastically reports. He understands spoken words more clearly, which is important in business. A daily Bible-reader, Derrick now is able to better read and fully comprehend the text. Recently, he received his GED, and he and his wife are opening a third business. Success builds upon success for this new reader.
